At $11/month for membership, you’d need over 5000 gamers to resub in order for this to be profitable. That’s 5x the participation needed compared to some little MTX event, and this is based on bringing in new or bringing returning subs – a thing much more difficult to do than getting existing users to spend a little extra.
At the end of the afternoon, Jagex is a company, and if they wish to keep the lights on, then they can not afford to dump buckets of money into material which doesn’t bring in revenue. I’m not saying that this is a justification to never develop new content on the contrary, they have to keep the userbase participated or there will be nobody left to cover whatever – but it does explain why monetized content appears to be prioritized and sent more precisely than other content. As it stands right now, the MTX content is exactly what funds the true content. As for me, I really like the way they are leaning of bringing in some permanent improvement with every event, even though this first one was not a massive success.

Consistently pushing mtx to make short-term profits is exactly what’s become the downfall of rs3 for a long time. That’s also the primary reason why the playerbase has been decreasing. What you’re saying is definitely correct. Yes, and that is the reason they have been moving towards attempting to tie in certain permanent improvement with each of the MTX events – so they are not solely short-term gains but that they do give some permanent value to the game – beginning with all the graphic rework of the Dwarven Mine. Arguably not so well-executed this time, but I think we can all agree it is a step in the ideal direction.
This is more personal opinion, but that I also somewhat disagree with the tagging of those events as rigorously”MTX events”. I’ve been engaging with this Artisan event without spending a dime and that I rather enjoy it. So long as the choice is there to finish everything without dropping money, I don’t see why it ought to be shunned. It provides some nice short-term goals to work towards using an adequate reward. It’s basically like a new twist on cheap RS gold the Yak Track, which I presume is generally well-liked but a bit over-played.
