I thought it was a beautiful touch on Nintendo’s part
One of my villages commented saying how they felt it was great that I was expressing myself after I changed my character’s sex, and Animal Crossing Items that I cried. This game has some power to helping individuals, although I closeted irl.
I really like that the developers put this in! Especially considering that fact that Japan isn’t very… progressive in regards to sex identity.
Iirc, in the English version it doesn’t alter anything because villagers are referred to by the sex neutral”they.” But it does alter text from gendered languages (and people with no neutral singular pronouns).
I’ve other users camping on my island (they are me I simply use them to get additional insect models out of Flick), and they are both girls. My villagers say,”Perhaps you have met Christine? I wonder what they like to eat!”
I relate to this SO much. I remember being a kid and playing with Harvest Moon titles- there were a few that I would pick the”boy main character” version rather than the girl one only so I could romance the ladies… I meanthey were just much better characters than the bachelors, nothing more than that… one of the things which helped me figure out I was bi.
Fun fact: The newest Harvest Moon name (now called Story of Seasons due to a licensing dispute) is a remake of Friends of Mineral Town and permits gay marriage. It’s available on Steam and cheap Animal Crossing New Horizons Bells Nintendo switch.
